I think term limits are a fine thing to have for congressmen. Generally, the incumbent will win the elections for Congress positions because of the lack of motivation the American people have towards voting. However, these short two-year terms allow for fresh blood to get into congress and also represents (sometimes) the ever changing interests of the American people. If anything not have term limits is undemocratic because in this republic we elect officials to represent our current interests. Term limits help this process and is just other way of limiting the governments power in Congress which is the strongest of the three branches.

Because there are no term limits, people who succeed in representing their constituents can be reelected as long as they continue to do so. By forcing them to step down after a certain number of terms, the public is also forced to search for someone new who might not represent their interests so well. There are incumbents who just keep coming back due to the apathy of their voters, but this is less of a problem with their number of terms and more a problem with voters who don't care.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment about needing "fresh blood" to represent our ever changing population. I also think term limits are a good way to get passed the american public's lack of interest in voting so the incumbent doesn't always just receive the default election.
ReplyDeletei agree that we do need some new congressmen in there every couple of years to go along with the ever changing public opinion.
